The city is surrounded by other affluent suburbs, including Castle Hills to the north, Olmos Park to the east, Hollywood Park to the south and Fair Oaks Ranch to the west. It was first settled in 1846 however it wasn't until 2000 that Shavano Park became an official city of Texas.

Shavano Park is composed of multiple small, gated, neighborhoods including Huntington, Willow Wood, and Bentley Manor, along with several non-gated, well-established neighborhoods including Willow Wood and The Woods of Shavano.
